STAGE 5 – ARRIVAL IN WEST AFRICA

Leaving the Sahara and arriving in the Sahel, this area serves as a meeting point between the nomadic Tuaregs of the Kel Dennek tribes and the settled peoples, including the Hausa, who were gradually Islamized from the 14th century onward. Kano, the economic capital of the Hausa city-state, oriented towards the north, built its power on caravan trade. The Hausa lived primarily from livestock farming, but notably from the slave trade and the distribution of renowned handcrafted leather and textiles produced in the regions of Sokoto and Kano. Here, some examples of textile art, including boubous, are displayed.
