STAGE 11 – THE WESTERN HIGH ATLAS

This stage of the journey to Marrakech crosses the Anti-Atlas, home to the Chleuh people, who reside in a loose confederation of villages scattered across the barren peaks. Living in regions shaped by the demanding landscape of granite boulders and red lava flows, the Chleuh have always been dedicated to their farms in the lush oasis valleys, which are now among the country’s most beautiful palm groves (palmeraies). The Anti-Atlas and Western High Atlas are also known for their communal granaries and the production of Berber carpets.
