STAGE 8 – AROUND TIMBUKTU

Upon arriving at the Great Mosque of Djenné, the journey continues southeast. Midway to Bamako, a stop is made in Ségou, the capital of the Bambara Empire, where numerous statues dedicated to motherhood greet visitors. This region of the Niger Inland Delta is also renowned for its white cotton boubous. The route then ascends towards Timbuktu, following the path of the ancient Ghana Empire, whose economic prosperity was due to its strategic location on caravan routes and its gold, copper, and salt mines. The caravan life resumes at a leisurely pace, moving with the rhythm of the dromedaries towards the oasis of Oualata.
